Design of an Integrated Smart Passive Modular House for Hot Climates

Project Type: Self-Initiated

Project Description

This project presents the design and development of an integrated smart modular housing system optimized for hot climates such as Saudi Arabia. The main objective is to reduce cooling energy consumption and carbon footprint while maintaining indoor thermal comfort and air quality. The proposed system utilizes a high-performance composite wall and roof panel that incorporates date palm fiber as the primary insulation material. This natural, locally available material provides effective thermal resistance while significantly reducing environmental impact compared to conventional insulation materials. The panel also includes cementitious outer layers and a reflective layer to minimize heat transfer and enhance durability. In addition to passive thermal strategies, the system integrates active and smart technologies, including a mini Energy Recovery Ventilator (ERV), air conditioning, and sensor-based control systems. These components work together to optimize ventilation, regulate indoor conditions, and improve energy efficiency. A full-scale prototype room is developed to demonstrate the integration of structural, thermal, and control systems. The system performance is evaluated through experimental testing (thermal conductivity and material strength) and energy simulation, with comparison against conventional construction methods. Overall, the project delivers a sustainable, low-carbon, and scalable housing solution aligned with Saudi Arabia’s climate challenges and Vision 2030 goals.
