SDIS: Autonomous System for Road Defect Detection and Reporting
Project Type: Self-Initiated
Project Description
The SDIS (Design and Implementation of an Autonomous Street Defect Inspection System) is an innovative solution designed to autonomously inspect road surfaces and detect street defects, such as potholes. This system integrates mechanical, electrical, and computer engineering to provide a fully autonomous inspection platform that can identify, analyze, and report defects efficiently. The SDIS robot is equipped with a 12V DC motor for precise mobility, an Intel RealSense depth camera for defect detection, and advanced georeferencing capabilities to accurately tag the location of each defect. The system utilizes computer vision for real-time defect detection and geometric analysis to estimate the severity and volume of defects, allowing for more accurate repair planning and resource allocation. Designed to meet engineering specifications, the SDIS robot operates with a low-voltage limit of ≤ 24V DC for safety and uses PWM motor control for smooth, variable speed operation. The robot is capable of detecting road defects autonomously, generating detailed reports within 30 seconds after detection, and estimating the required materials for repairs with an accuracy margin of ±15%. The system’s lightweight structure, modular design, and autonomous functionality make it an ideal tool for efficient road maintenance, reducing manual inspection costs, improving repair planning, and enhancing overall road safety.
